To outline the amount of normal notice a faculty or staff member should give when he or she resigns.
Notification of resignation by a University faculty member is expected to be early enough to obviate serious embarrassment to the institution. The faculty member shall, therefore, give no less than four months' notice of resignation.
A faculty member of this University may inquire into, and consider the acceptance of, an appointment elsewhere at any time and without previous consultation with his/her supervisors. It is agreed, however, that if a definite offer follows, he/she shall not accept it without giving such notice as is indicated in the preceding provision. He/She is at liberty to ask his/her superior officers to reduce, or waive, the notification requirements there specified, but is expected to conform to their decision on these points.
For faculty members who teach, it is expected that such resignation from employment shall be effective at the end of a fiscal year. Thus, in any particular year, the final date for tendering a resignation for a faculty member who teaches is March 1, to be effective June 30.
Staff employees should give adequate notice prior to the effective date of resignation. Ordinarily, this should be at least one month, but a minimum of two weeks is expected.
