When a new faculty member is appointed effective with the beginning of a semester or a summer session, it is important that a specific effective date of the appointment be determined for fixing the effective date of coverage in the group insurances. For all other purposes, such as preparation of the IBIS Form "NAPP" and Memorandum of Personal Service, a non-specific term is used, such as "Beginning Fall Semester".
If a new employee is appointed at the beginning of a semester or summer session, the Personnel Recommendation should read "Beginning Fall (Spring Semester, or Summer Session) Semester". An exact beginning date, such as September 1, should be used only when a new employee is expected to be physically at work on that day.
The Memorandum of Personal Service shall designate that the "Effective Date of Appointment" or the "Period of Appointment" will begin Fall Semester, Spring Semester, or Summer Session. An actual beginning date, such as September 1, will be used only when verified as the date when a new employee physically reports to work.
The Office of Human Resources will determine the effective date of insurance coverage for all appointments which begin with a semester or summer session as indicated below:

|Spring Semester||Seven (7) days prior to the first day of classes|
|Summer Session||Seven (7) days prior to the first day of classes|
When a candidate for a University position is notified by mail that he/she has been accepted for employment, the employing college or department should avoid any reference to an actual beginning date unless the new employee is expected to be physically at work on that date.
