To provide administrators with a definition of the term "Formal Study" as used in HR16.
Formal study, as outlined in HR16 (Item "b" under "Purpose of Leave") shall mean study leading to a degree, certificate, or license, or acquisition of expertise clearly necessary for the conduct of University assignments.
An individual who accepts full-time employment for another employer during a leave shall not be considered in a formal study status.
Recognized awards (e.g. Fulbright, Guggenheim, Ford, etc.) shall be considered formal study only if the program of activity to be undertaken during the leave of absence meets the requirements listed above.
